Who are we?

Led by Derek Burn - ACAS Independent Expert, previously Senior Partner of MCG and Director of Consulting with DLA Piper, the international law firm - Pay Auditor draws upon the skills of other Independent Experts and professional HR practitioners with 15 plus years experience

Clients have included some 80 organisations in the public and private sectors. Experience includes work within the financial and manufacturing sectors, government agencies, and a number of local authorities, housing associations and development /social enterprise agencies.

Derek and colleagues worked as advisors to the EOC (now the EHRC) in the 1980's on job evaluation factors that were considered gender bias free. More recently he has continued to act as advisor to the Government of Ireland Public Service Benchmarking Body developing job evaluation and comparison of all public sector jobs (including local government) against private sector pay. He has been involved with evaluation and pay projects for the Armed Forces' Pay Review Body and the Prison Service and project managed the work for the CBI on a  Managing Absence report.


Derek worked with the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) developing HR Benchmarking in which over 1000 organisations have participated. HR Benchmarker provides a database of information on current practice in personnel unsurpassed in the UK.

He is author of three books “Benchmarking the HR Function” and “Achieving Corporate Success Through People,” published by Financial Times/Pitman Publications and “Pay Audit-Equal Value Reviews and Beyond”. He has contributed regularly to People Management and Personnel Today magazines and a number of Croner publications Most recently he provided the Chapter on Equal Pay for the CIPD Reward Management  Manual. and wrote Discrimination Law and Issues in Pay 2010   prepared for the Office of Manpower Economics and the statutory Pay Review Bodies

In 2005, he was appointed as one of the twenty two ACAS Independent Experts on  Equal Pay and Job Evaluation in the UK
